What a load of rubbish!
We have a big rubbish problem and this isn't being helped by the strong winds at present. We need your ideas! What can we do at school to help minimise the amount of rubbish we have each day? Post your ideas to this blog!

Thank you!
A big thank you goes to The Hawke's Bay Environment Centre in Hastings in conjunction with the Napier City Council, for arranging worms for our worm farm activity. The cost of these has been covered by the Napier City Council to encourage more sustainable ways of getting rid of waste.

World Environment Day
Friday 5th June, is World Environment Day. What can you do to help? Start with something small - something that you can do easily. Maybe it is helping with sorting the recycling at home. Maybe it is turning off lights that are left on when no-one is in the room. Maybe it is turning off a tap, picking up rubbish in your street or walking instead of going in a car. You can share what you have done by making a comment to this post! Alicia.

Siobhan Schwass is Tamatea High School's new Environmental Leader. She came to talk to us about her passion for looking after her school and community. On the way to Porritt School she picked up a full bag of rubbish. She has fun recycling. She wears recycled clothing, her diary is made of recycled paper, it even has a recycled plastic cover. She said she doesn't worry about what people think because she is proud of herself. She has started an Eco Club at the High School and wants to build a worm farm and create compost. Siobhan was impressed at our rubbish bins. She said she wants her High School to do a similar thing. We all enjoyed listening to all the interesting things she has been doing. Thanks Siobhan!

Poor Mr. Beere!
On windy days, please be careful with the recycling. It blows everywhere and Mr Beere has to pick it up. Hannah Pugh.
Did you know?
The moon doesn't shine by itself. The moon is like a mirror. It reflects the sunlight.
The sun isn't moving round us, it's the Earth that's moving! Every 24 hours our Earth spins right round just like a spinning top.
A food 'mile' or food kilometre is all about the distance food travels from where it grows to where it is sold and eaten.

Monarch butterflies at Porritt
Porritt School is now a member of the NZ Monarch Butterfly Trust. The Trust's aim is to build up the number of Monarchs in New Zealand by creating protective environments, tagging butterflies for research, growing the plants they need for survival and educating local communities. Our Eco Kids Club will be looking at ways to help this happen.
