Welcome to 2010!

We have many Porritt students who are keen to be involved in our Eco Kids Club. It was exciting to have so many turn up at our first meeting.
During 2010, we will continue to look at ways we can look after our school environment and encourage others to do the same. It'll be fun and we'll learn lots along the way!

What a load of rubbish!

We have a big rubbish problem and this isn't being helped by the strong winds at present. We need your ideas! What can we do at school to help minimise the amount of rubbish we have each day? Post your ideas to this blog!

Planting swan plant seeds

The Eco Kids Club met last Friday and planted swan plant seeds. These need careful watering each day. In a few weeks we hope to have seedlings which can be planted out into gardens. A big thank you to all those who contributed in some way!

Thank you!

A big thank you goes to The Hawke's Bay Environment Centre in Hastings in conjunction with the Napier City Council, for arranging worms for our worm farm activity. The cost of these has been covered by the Napier City Council to encourage more sustainable ways of getting rid of waste.

Worm farms

Today some of our Eco Kids Club people spent their lunch time making mini worm farms. Some were even brave enough to take on the job of picking up the worms (complete with horse manure) and transferring this to the bottles. They survived, (the worms too!), and everyone had success.

Can you help?

We have a number of projects coming up which depend on the generosity and support of our community. If you can help with your time, donations of potting mix, unwanted pots for seed germination... please contact the school office. Ph 06 844 4620.

World Environment Day

Friday 5th June, is World Environment Day. What can you do to help? Start with something small - something that you can do easily. Maybe it is helping with sorting the recycling at home. Maybe it is turning off lights that are left on when no-one is in the room. Maybe it is turning off a tap, picking up rubbish in your street or walking instead of going in a car. You can share what you have done by making a comment to this post! Alicia.
